Handlebar & Stem: Installation and Setup

Tools/ parts required:
3,4,5,6 mm hex keys

Rotate and Secure the Stem (For non-folding bike models)

Your new bike may arrive with the stem rotated downwards and the handlebar not installed. To adjust:

  • Use a 6mm hex tool to loosen the stem’s rotation bolt.
  • Set the stem to your desired angle and height, then tighten the bolt securely.
  • Ensure the stem is firmly locked in place and does not move. After your first 10 hours of riding, re-check to confirm it is still secure.

Important Note:

If the stem is rotated to its maximum height, it may affect cable routing, causing tension on the shifting, brake, or electrical wiring. Double-check that cables are not strained and that all electrical connections remain secure and free from potential snags.

Install the Handlebar

  • Remove the stem's faceplate and position the handlebar in the stem clamp, ensure the cables are not twisted.
  • Reinstall the faceplate using the four faceplate bolts with a 4mm hex tool.
  • Make sure the handlebar is centered lengthwise and rotated to your preferred backsweep angle.
  • Tighten the faceplate bolts evenly, alternating in a cross pattern. (Recommended torque: 5 N*m)
  • Ensure the upper and lower gaps between the stem body and faceplate are even, which will secure the handlebar properly.
  • After 10 hours of riding, re-check to confirm everything remains secure.

Check the controls

(The handlebar controls on your bike have been pre-adjusted by a VoltBike technician.)

Before riding, ensure the following:

  • Make sure you can comfortably reach the brake levers and familiarize yourself with all cockpit controls.
  • Check that all controls are securely fastened.
  • To confirm the stem and handlebar assembly is tight, twist the handlebar while
holding the front wheel stationary. Ensure there is no movement.
  • The LCD screen’s plastic mounting bracket and power button unit should be snug on the handlebar but not over tightened.
  • Use a 3mm hex tool to check that the two bolts (M4 x 8mm) fastening the screen to
the plastic mount are securely tightened.

Installing a threadless stem / Headset adjustment

The headset of your bike has been pre-adjusted by a VoltBike technician. Most threadless stems use a vertical bolt to pre-load the headset bearing assembly and two side pinch bolts to align and clamp the stem to the fork’s steer tube.

Preparation:

  •  Ensure the headset bearing and cup assembly are fully seated with the frame and fork.
  • Verify that the correct headset spacers are in place.
  • Check that a threaded star nut is installed inside the fork’s steer tube.

Installing:

  • Apply a small amount of grease to the inside of the lower stem body, then slide it onto the steer tube.
  • Make sure the side pinch bolts are positioned below the top edge of the fork’s
    steer tube for proper clamping.
  • Visually align the stem with the front fork and wheel.
  • If present, remove the top rubber boot.
  • Use a 5mm hex tool to tighten the vertical bolt and set the bearing pre-load. Avoid over-tightening the headset bearing assembly.

Securing the Stem:

  • Once the stem is aligned and the headset pre-load is set, use a 4mm hex tool to firmly tighten the two side pinch bolts on the stem.
  • Ensure the stem is straight and securely clamped to the fork’s steer tube, and that it cannot move.

Final Checks:

  • Check that the steering moves freely without binding.
  • Apply the front brake and check for any play in the headset assembly.
Note: some play may be felt in the suspension fork bushings
  • Re-check the assembly after your first 10 hours of riding.
