What is Torque Sensor?

A torque sensor is a device that measures the amount of rotational force (or
torque) applied to the pedals while you're riding. This measurement is used to
adjust the amount of motor assistance the e-bike provides based on how hard
you are pedaling. Unlike cadence sensors, which only monitor the speed of
pedaling, torque sensors offer a more precise, responsive system by factoring in
both the effort you put into pedaling and your pedaling speed. Typically torque
sensors are used on mid-drive E-bikes like the Voltbike Enduro, Venture, and
Core models. However some on the benefits of torque sensors can also be
utilized in some newer hub motor Voltbikes.

Benefits of a Torque Sensor:

  • More Natural Riding Feel: By adjusting motor assistance based on how much effort you apply to the pedals, the ride feels more like riding a regular bike, with a smooth, proportional increase in power.
  • Improved Performance: Torque sensors make for a more efficient and responsive e-bike, as the motor provides just the right amount of assistance based on your input. This can be especially helpful for tackling hills or riding on varied terrain.
  • Better Battery Management: Torque sensors allow the motor to adjust its output in a way that can conserve battery power. When you're pedaling hard, the motor provides more assistance, but when you're coasting or pedaling lightly, it uses less power, helping to optimize battery usage.
  • Enhanced Safety: Because the motor adjusts based on rider input, there's less risk of the motor suddenly jerking or over-accelerating. This can improve control and safety, especially in technical or off-road conditions.
