Winter can be tough on e-bikes, but with the right preparation, you can ensure your VoltBike remains in top condition until Spring or whenever you're ready to get on the saddle and ride again.
Many of our customers ride their VoltBikes year-round even in Canada's harshest conditions, and we salute them! However, for many cold weather means storage time.
Our website and store has a sprawling collection of Replacement Parts to help keep your bike in excellent shape.

Here’s our tips on how you can prepare and store your VoltBike for the cold months:
1. Clean Your VoltBike Thoroughly
Before storage, give your VoltBike a thorough cleaning. Start by washing off all the dirt, mud and salt from the bike, which can lead to rust. Use a mild detergent, a soft brush for hard-to-reach areas, and rinse with fresh water. Let your bike dry completely to avoid moisture buildup.
Pay special attention to the chain, derailleur, and brake components. Lubricate these parts after cleaning to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation come spring.
2. Check and Charge the Battery
- Battery Storage: It’s advised to store the VoltBike battery at about 50-80% charge (2 or 3 bars on the battery's display). Leaving the battery overcharged or fully discharged can damage the battery's health. Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Regular Charging: Charge your battery for about 15 minutes at least once every 6-8 weeks to maintain its health, even if you’re not using the bike. This gives the cells some activity, as lithium cells hate being bored.
3. Inflate Tires
Inflate your VoltBike's tires to the maximum recommended pressure before storage. The PSI range is printed on the tire itself. This prevents flat spots from forming, which can occur if the bike is left stationary for months with under-inflated tires. Under inflated tires can damage the inner tube, so keep an eye on the tires.
4. Lubricate Moving Parts
Apply a good quality bike lubricant to the chain, gears, and any other moving parts. This not only prevents rust but also ensures the parts move freely when you take the bike out again.
5. Store in the Right Environment
The bike itself can be stored in very cold conditions, as the screen is rated to -30C, but the battery itself is the sensitive part and should be stored at room temperature, and not above 30C, or below 0C. If storing in very cold weather, please remove the screen too and keep it somewhere where it can avoid extreme temperatures.
- Location: Choose a dry, climate-controlled space where temperature fluctuations are minimal. Avoid damp basements unless you can ensure humidity levels are controlled.
- Position: Store your bike upright using the kickstand if possible. If you must lay it down, do so on the drive side if you have a derailleur guard to avoid putting pressure on the gears and motor. Our folding eBikes can be stored in the folded position.
6. Cover Your Bike
A breathable bike cover can protect your VoltBike from dust and minor environmental damage. Make sure it’s not too tight or airtight, as this could trap moisture.
We sell a great bike cover here at VoltBike which fits all our bikes with the exception of the Trio and Kodiak.
7. Mechanical Checks
Before you put your bike away:
- Check for Wear: Inspect the brake pads, cables, and any other components for wear. Replace or repair as needed.
- Secure the Bike: If your storage area isn’t secure, consider using a lock to deter theft. We also offer a tracking device, just in case.
8. Final Notes Before Spring
When winter ends (at last!), before you ride again:
- Battery: Charge it up to full and check its functionality.
- Tires: Check tire pressure and inflate if necessary.
- General Inspection: Look over your bike and smile knowing you're ready to go out for a ride on your beloved VoltBike.
By following these steps, you'll ensure your VoltBike is ready for adventure when the warmer weather returns. Enjoy your winter, and here's to many more kilometers in the coming year!
