Among the most popular and wee-reviewed full-suspension e-bikes in the market today are the VoltBike Outback and VoltBike Enduro.

In this article, we will explore the benefits of owning a full-suspension electric bike, with a focus on the features and advantages of the VoltBike Outback and VoltBike Enduro. Whether you're a seasoned rider or a beginner looking for a fun and practical way to get around, read on to discover why a full-suspension e-bike could be the perfect choice for you.

Let's talk about the upsides and downsides of a full-suspension eBike. There is an extra cost to go above and beyond our all-star line-up of the VoltBike Bravo and Yukon, which is an excellent choice for most people. But why spring for the extra cost?

Pro's and Cons

Pros:

  1. Comfortable Ride: Full-suspension electric bikes offer a smoother ride on rough terrains, making them ideal for off-road adventures and mountain biking. Even going over speed bumps in the city is more comfortable thanks to the front and rear shock on these bikes.
  2. Better Traction: The suspension system on full-suspension electric bikes enhances traction, ensuring better control and stability, especially on steep or uneven surfaces.
  3. Improved Handling: The suspension system also helps to reduce the impact of bumps and shocks on the rider, allowing for better handling and maneuverability.
  4. Enhanced Safety: With better traction and handling, full-suspension electric bikes offer enhanced safety and stability, reducing the risk of accidents and injuries.
  5. Longevity: The suspension system also protects the bike from wear and tear, making it more durable and long-lasting. We still have many of our older Enduro models still riding around out there.

Cons:

  1. Heavier: Full-suspension electric bikes tend to be heavier than their non-suspension counterparts, making them less ideal for commuting or casual riding. Fortunately the Enduro is designed to be lighter and the weight is further reduced as it has no fenders or rear-rack.
  2. More Expensive: Full-suspension electric bikes are more expensive than non-suspension bikes, due to the added cost of the suspension system. The VoltBike Outback features a Monarch R shock from RockShox which is a high-end brand.
  3. More Maintenance: The suspension system requires more maintenance than non-suspension bikes, which can add to the overall cost and effort of owning a full-suspension e-bike. Owning a shock pump is recommended to keep the shock pumped up to the adequate level depending on your body-weight. See your shock’s manual for more info.
  4. Reduced Efficiency: The suspension system on full-suspension electric bikes can reduce the efficiency of the motor, resulting in shorter battery life and reduced range. Though this factor is a minor issue and can be avoid by using a lower pedal assist level or upgrading to a bigger battery.
  5. Not Suitable for all Terrains: While full-suspension electric bikes excel on rough terrains, they may not be as efficient on flat, smooth surfaces, where the suspension system is unnecessary. Those on smooth terrain may simply upgrade their seat for more comfort.

It's important to note that the pros and cons listed above may vary depending on the specific make and model of the full-suspension electric bike. The VoltBike Outback and VoltBike Enduro, for example, have been designed to address some of the cons listed above, such as their lightweight aluminum frames, high-performance motors, and adjustable suspension systems.

Which Model to Choose?

Both the VoltBike Outback and VoltBike Enduro are high-quality full-suspension electric bikes with a range of impressive features. Here's a comparison of their specifications to help determine which bike may be the best choice:

  1. Motor and Battery: The VoltBike Outback comes with a Bafang Ultra mid-drive motor, delivering a powerful 750W of peak power, and a 48V 17.5Ah battery. The VoltBike Enduro, on the other hand, is equipped with a Bafang M620 mid-drive motor, delivering up to 1000W of peak power, and a 48V 17.5Ah battery. Both motors and batteries provide plenty of power and range for long and challenging rides and we have the option to upgrade to a bigger battery pack for small fee.
  2. Frame and Suspension: The VoltBike Outback has a 6061 aluminum alloy frame and a RockShox suspension system with 165mm travel, providing a smooth and comfortable ride. The VoltBike Enduro has a lighter-weight aluminum alloy frame and an adjustable DNM air suspension system with up to 190mm travel, making it suitable for even more extreme off-road conditions.
  3. Brakes and Gears: The VoltBike Outback has a Shimano 7-Speed drivetrain and hydraulic disc brakes with 180mm rotors, providing smooth shifting and powerful stopping power. The VoltBike Enduro has a Shimano 8 Speed drivetrain and the same great hydraulic disc brakes, ensuring reliable and efficient performance. The Enduro has an optional 8-Speed Box Components brand upgrade for the nominal price of $100. Well worth the upgrade for enhanced performance and reliability.
  4. Other Features: Both bikes have similar features such as an LCD display with USB port, integrated front and rear lights, and puncture-resistant tires. Both bikes have excellent range with a standard 17.5 amp hour battery with optional upgrades to 19.6 or even 25 amp hours for those looking for long distance rides. The Outback comes fitted with fenders and a rear-rack with a 15kg capacity making it great for travel and commuting.

Overall, the VoltBike Enduro has a more powerful motor, torque sensor, and slightly better gears than the VoltBike Outback. However, the VoltBike Outback is still an excellent choice for those looking for a high-performance full-suspension electric bike at a slightly lower price point. Ultimately, the best choice will depend on your specific needs, preferences, and budget.
